The authors write with precision and clarity. They explicate a complex topic systematically and render theoretical constructs immediately useful. Numerous clinical examples add clarity and life to the theoretical aspects of their presentation. This book is readable by practicing clinicians and by the interested non-professional. As a post-graduate lecturer and psychoanalytic supervisor, I have found this book to be an excellent introduction to Kohut's Self Psychology primarily due to the authors' ability to hold the readers interest, to make difficult concepts clear, and to stay close to Kohut's the original ideas. This book is also useful as a refesher for experienced practitioners and as a good prerequisite for more more advanced and / or specialized study.

Book Description
Heinz Kohut's work represents an important departure from the Freudian
tradition of psychoanalysis. As one of the founders of the 'self
psychology' movement in America, he had an instrumental role in one of
the most important developments in psychoanalysis since Freud. Based his
practice on the belief that narcissistic vulnerabilities play a
significant part in the suffering that brings people for treatment,
Kohut evolved an understanding of the theraputic setting, applicable to
both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. However, as Kohut's works were
written predominantly for a psychoanalytic audience, they are often
difficult to interpret. Proposing that in order to grasp fully the
evolution of Kohut's ideas, one must know something about the man and
the milieu in which he lived, Dr. Allen Siegel incorporates biographical

I have read and reread this book. If you are in therapy or or thinking of therapy it is absolutly the best book to read. Any confusion about your own therapy will be mentioned in some way in this book. It helps to clear your own mind and look at yourself in a productive way, realising that no matter how hard therapy is there is a reason for everything a therapist does. The book gives comfort when dealing with difficult issues as you might see yourself in one of his patients and realise that your own therapist is like Dr. Basch and doing what is best for you and totally on your side, eager to help you. It is a fantastic book, and I have never ever read a better book on psychotherapy. Thank you Dr. Basch.

Though other books (like Vaillant's Changing Character) are more comprehensive, this eminently readable guide to brief therapy is excellent. I find Basch's linking of therapy with developmental levels highly instructive-I now use it with clients. The book is also very readable, with ides that readily lend themselves to rapid diagnosis/assessment and intervention. Well done.
