v8Hm3NB%i#l|0Joseph Nuttin wasa scholar and an author. He was active in the fields of learning, motivation, and personality. As early as 1941 Nuttin emphasized the informational (= cognitive) aspects of reinforcement: rewards inform subjects of the utility of a response in 'open task' settings, and retention is improved through the incorporation of that response in a permanent interest system. Motivation as cognitively processed in behavioral plans, projects and tasks is a theme running through all of Nuttin's work. An individual's time perspective is therefore not a cold framework, but an essential determinant of people's motivation to plan and act. As to his personality model, he viewed the person as one pole of a relational or interactional network with the biological, social and existential environment as the other pole. Joseph Nuttin published extensively on all these issues. He is the author of about 15 books in Dutch, French or English. Many of these were translated into German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish, Japanese and Russian. In addition he published an impressively large number of book chapters and articles in national and international journals.心理学空间k7z8MO&\$u5{{^-e

Joseph Nuttin wasa monument. This impressive man helped shape psychology and psychologists, his eyes and mind constantly focussed not only on the quality of our science itself, but also on the institutional structures in which it should be embedded.

Joseph Nuttin is now a man of the past, but he wasa man of the future. A few years before his death in 1988, he decided to donate a portion of his savings towards the promotion of basic research in psychology through the creation of a special fund. More than anything this donation testifies to Joseph Nuttin's lifelong commitment to the future of basic research in psychology at Leuven, his most cherished child.
