I first met Carl Hovland when I arrived for graduate心理学空间3D.qH@*oo
study in Yale's illustrious Department of Psychology in the
-r\:MOK0@j0fall of 1951. Hovland's title, Sterling professor, seemed
.Q&Ii$|,|;I,r_ }0wonderfully euonymous for this tall, distinguished man,心理学空间o|^i)d@;l8}5}R
endowed as he was with rare personal qualities and wavy
-h _ b%ps i*Q0hair turning to silver. Now, over forty-five years later, I am心理学空间+B[|s'dM1U

|,Ss"Ip!n,PU2g+J s0Particularly striking were the apparent ease and efficiency
2vv8E^6i&`Cs0with which Hovland managed all the many things in which
gV/g X7tk };oU:`0he was always engaged and his constructive use of every
M Zy1VAm0moment of time. While showing genuine interest in every-
kSqkun0one with whom he had contact, he had a way of keeping心理学空间7IjC*l,q4?{7X
administrative interactions brief and to the point. His ex-

plunking down in a chair in his office for more than the心理学空间l~#|0xi,T

On those occasions when I did actually sit down in心理学空间E$o-D7S?9P4_ qT.A
Hovland's office, he would also be reading his mail and

when I sent him a note, I imagined that while he was

how the drafting of his 1953 paper with Hovland began:心理学空间4RHo SbX/ct6S7C3Y}!r

:]:IUbVW!d'y*C0Hovland was a master of the Socratic method. Seem-
i*S^vt:O8[Z0ingly without any prepared agenda, he would ask the graduate心理学空间V/R6@7n9U%\h*B
students around the seminar table for their comments on心理学空间{,Cy'P&^P2U,Sv$m
the (always seminal) readings he had assigned, or for their
aC%UJ#ba0proposals concerning an illustrative problem of experimental
9m%i@-H gi6He~0design or data analysis he was working through on the
0Iv7n^_{8n%N3l a M0chalk board. At first, this evoked frustration or anxiety in心理学空间#uz5]x#h
students accustomed to more structured styles of instruc-

illustrative problem might find that, before he or she was

+v3z i#BX0writing it on the board, apparently having arrived at it by
w WdAJ*T |DS0his own swifter, purely mental calculation.) Former Yale心理学空间cou}+m]/KG
student Philip Zimbardo (now a professor of social psy-

Hovland's shyness and intellectual mastery may have pre-

It was shortly after joining the Bell Labs that I began my心理学空间|3qCU(u o)G
