Cheryl Kaiser is the director of the Social Identity Laboratory at the University of Washington. Kaiser’s research examines the interplay between social psychological theoretical perspectives and social issues such as diversity, immigration, social inequality, and employment-discrimination law. She also studies how personal, situational, and structural factors affect the perception of prejudice as well as how individuals cope cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally with prejudice. “I will devote this sabbatical toward acquiring expertise in civil rights law,” says Kaiser, “by pursuing coursework on civil rights and employment discrimination at the University of Washington Law School. I will integrate this legal knowledge within my research program on the psychology of discrimination to better identify research questions that are central to law and policy as well as educate lawyers about the relevant science on discrimination.” Kaiser hopes the opportunity to delve into a new discipline can shed light onto how law and psychological science on discrimination can more effectively inform each other. 社会认同 就业歧视法 偏见 |

Leah Krubitzer,神经科学家Dr. Krubitzer is interested in how complex brains, such as those in humans, are built from simpler forms. Her work examines the anatomical connections and electrophysiological properties of neurons in the neocortex, the portion of the brain responsible for perception, cognition, learning, and memory. Through comparative studies, it is possible to determine which features of the neocortex are shared by all mammals, and how new features have been added during morphological or behavioral specialization. In this way, she can reconstruct the evolution of the neocortex and its relationship to functional changes. Her work accounts for the remarkable diversity in mammalian behavioral and perceptual abilities through the action of a few evolutionarily old developmental mechanisms. While constraining evolutionary change, these mechanisms have also provided the variation needed for such diversification. |

I am a professor of psychology with broad interests in auditory, visual, and cross-modal perception, psychology of art, and philosophy of mind (view CV here). You may think of me as a neo-Gestalt psychologist who uses tools of cognitive science — experiments using human observers, mathematical analysis of patterns, and a mathematical modeling of data — to solve some of the enduring puzzles of perceptual organization. I teach in the cognitive area of UVa's Psychology Department, which has an excellent group of researchers in perception (see Denny Proffitt's, Rachel Keen's, and Steve Boker's homepages). I look forward to bright and hard-working graduate and undergraduate students, from the U.S. and abroad, joining the outstanding group of people without whom m lab would not be the wonderful and productive environment it is. |
