Some historical awareness is required for us to understand our own worldview and put it into perspective.First let us look at the position that mothers and children have held throughout the centuries; it will then be shown that the norm has shifted from a relative neglect of children in large paternalistic families to an often exclusive bond with the mother figure.

This was detrimental to the economy: with the advent of the industrial revolution,ever more manual labour was needed.
Relationships between parents and children are strongly determined by time and place —— that is to say, not only by the culture of a region, a social class, an ethnic group, but also by the historical moment. If we want to examine motherhood in the Western world more closely, we also have to look at the past and at the genesis of the concept of maternal love, which is not self-evident in the least.
